Levelling deals with measurements in a vertical plane, making sure same points are verify on the horizontal plane.
There are many levelling instruments that are used in taking level, but I will be discussing about the most easiest of all “Water Level”.
Water level seems like a mysterious device, but the only magic involved is gravity. A water level does not depend on line of sight unlike other levelling instruments like Dumpy Level, so you can level around corners without resetting the tool.
STEPS IN MAKING USE OF THE WATER LEVEL
[1] GET YOUR PLASTIC TUBE AND FILL IT WITH WATER
Get a bucket of Water ready, you can add food coloring to the water for easier visibility. Make sure the plastic tube is about 15m to 30m In length, Keep in mind the longer the tube, the more water you will need to use.
Filling your tube, make sure your bucket of water is elevated, put in your plastic tube in the bucket then suck the tube from the other end of the tube. Make sure no bubble is form in the tube, bubble cause error while making use of a water Level.
[2] MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO KICKS OR KNOTS IN THE TUBING
Kinks and knots can throw off the level and result in an incorrect reading. Slide your hand over the entire length of the tube before you use it so you can be sure there are no kinks or knots. A tube that is old or worn may be more prone to knots and kinks so you may want to replace it over time.
[3] MAKE SURE BOTH ENDS LINEUP
If both ends line up, you’re good to go. Test the accuracy of the level by holding both ends together. If the water levels don’t line up (and you’re not standing on the hose), you’ve got air bubbles trapped in the line. If you can’t get the bubbles out by tapping the line with a finger, the best thing to do is empty the hose and repeat step 1.
[4] ESTABLISH A BENCHMARK
For you make use of a water level, there must be 2 people involve. The first person should Place the plastic tube where you want to establish your benchmark (you may want to transfer 1meter around a room, measure the 1meter, then V marks the spot). Draw a prominent V shape over a straight line to indicate the precise elevation. The surface of the water in the tube is slightly concave, both workers should agree beforehand on whether to mark the high point or the low point.
[5] TRANSFER YOUR LEVEL ALL AROUND
One person calls the shots, and the other works the room. After establishing a benchmark in a convenient corner, one worker remains at that location with one end of the hose while his partner heads for the nearest corner with the opposite end and a pencil. The first worker slowly moves the tube up or down until the surface of the water aligns with the benchmark. After pausing for a few seconds to verify that the water has stopped moving, he gives his colleague the OK to mark the wall.
I hope with this, you know what water level is all about and you can now make use of a water level.
Thanks.
